6 famous people who were lost at sea


1. Roald Amundson - The fearless arctic explorer disappeared in 1928 at age 55, while on a rescue mission (by plane) in the Berents Sea. In spite of numerous large-scale searches neither he or his remains were ever found. What exactly happened to him or the circumstances surrounding his death are still unknown.

2. Henry Hudson - This super famous explorer and navigator disappeared without a trace in 1611. He was only 46. During an expedition there was a mutiny aboard his ship. The mutineers set Hudson, his teenage son, and some other crew members adrift in an open boat in the middle of Hudson Bay. No trace of anyone on that boat was ever seen again.

3. Amelia Earhart - This brave and adventurous pilot vanished without a trace in the Pacific Ocean in 1937. Co-pilot Fred Noonan, her plane, and Amelia herself were never seen or heard from again. Over the years many theories have been proposed to explain her disappearance. None have been proven. Most experts in the story believe she crash-landed on a remote island and survived for a while, eventually succumbing to the island’s elements and indigenous fauna (i.e. sand crabs). Some think she may have been captured by the imperial Japanese and held prisoner until her death. Fact is no one knows for sure, and sadly, we will most likely never know.

4. Glenn Miller - This legendary bandleader vanished without a trace at age 40 in 1944. He was lost when his plane disappeared in the English Channel. Over the years many have speculated about the circumstances Surrounding his death. Nothing has ever been found of his remains. And there’s been no proof as to how or why he died. The only thing that is known for sure is that the world lost a great musician, soldier, and bandleader.

5. Harold Holt - This Australian prime minister disappeared into the sea in 1967. This extremely strange circumstance began when PM Holt decided to go for a swim off Cheviot Beach near Portsea, VictoriaSomething he regularly did. In spite of the rather mundane circumstances surrounding all this, he promptly vanished. Although a huge search effort was conducted, no trace of him was ever found. Of course many conspiracy theories followed his disappearance. Most experts believe he most likely had a heart attack and was swept out to see where he was consumed by sharks.

6. Daniel Küblböck - This famous German singer leaped overboard in 2018 while on a cruise ship near Canada. Despite a huge search, no trace of him was ever found. He was declared officially dead in March 2021. He was only 33.
