I LOVE Halloween

You want to know what's cool? Halloween. I'm not sure why I love it so, but I do. It's the one holiday that doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't, which is to say, completely fun. And that's ironic, since on Halloween you pretend. Heh heh!

Think about it. The other holidays all have these lofty, noble goals. Christmas is about peace on Earth and goodwill toward men, which translates into a mad scramble for parking at the mall, and trying to figure out what to buy everybody on your list, and going into debt to do it. Thanksgiving is about being grateful, a concept that's often overshadowed by the fact that you've just eaten your body weight in turkey and are now trapped on a couch with your Uncle Bob, who is watching football while explaining his theory on why the moon landing was faked.

But Halloween? Halloween is just about pure, unadulterated fun. It’s the one night a year when you can put on a ridiculous costume and nobody questions it. You want to go to work dressed as a giant hot dog? Go for it! The boss will probably just say, "Hey, nice hot dog costume!" The only time a coworker would ever wear a hot dog costume is if he's a hot dog vendor and he is wearing it as a hot dog vendor. Otherwise, he gets fired. But on Halloween, it's just a Tuesday. Or whatever day it happens to be.

And the candy! We're not talking about a sensible portion of candy, either. We're talking about a pillowcase full of the stuff. You show up at a stranger's door, mumble something about "trick or treat," and they just hand you a bunch of mini-chocolate bars, as if this is a completely normal activity. You're a sugar-crazed goblin, and they're just an enabler. It's beautiful.

Then there's the whole "haunted" aspect. People spend weeks meticulously decorating their yards with fake spiderwebs, skeletons, and tombstones that say things like "Here lies the last guy who didn't give out full-sized candy bars." And you know what? We love it. We drive around at night just to look at it, marveling at the sheer dedication of people who are willing to spend their weekends rigging up a fog machine in their bushes.

Halloween is the only holiday where the primary goal is to scare people, but not in a mean way. It's more of a fun scare, like when you're watching a horror movie and you jump, but then you laugh because it was just a cat jumping out from behind a curtain. It's a collective agreement to embrace the ridiculous, the spooky, and the delicious.

So, yeah. Halloween is super cool. It’s a holiday for people who don’t take themselves too seriously, a night when we can all be a little bit weird, a little bit scary, and very hungry for candy. It’s the most honest holiday we have. It’s a holiday that says, "Life is weird. Let's eat some sugar and pretend we're vampires." And honestly, what could be better than that?

And now! A Super Deep (Possibly Overthought) Psycho-Analytic Reason I LOVE Halloween:

Halloween allows people to confront their shadow self—the hidden, repressed parts of their identity (fears, desires, impulses) that they normally suppress in order to function in polite society. According to Jungian psychology, the “Shadow” is the darker side of our psyche: the primal, chaotic, irrational, wild elements we’re conditioned to hide.

On Halloween, society gives permission—even encouragement—to externalize those hidden aspects. Costumes become symbolic masks that don’t conceal identity so much as they reveal inner desires or fears in a socially acceptable way. A person who dresses as a powerful monster may unconsciously be embracing repressed feelings of powerlessness. Someone who goes for sexy costumes might be expressing desires they normally suppress due to shame or societal norms. Someone who chooses goofy, absurd costumes may be indulging their inner child, giving voice to the playful, carefree self long buried under responsibility and control.

Even the ritual of engaging with fear (horror movies, haunted houses) acts as a form of controlled exposure therapy—a cathartic, safe way to dance on the edge of danger. You face death symbols (skeletons, ghosts, tombstones) not with dread, but with celebration, laughter, and candy. There’s an unconscious thrill in mocking mortality, in symbolically overpowering fear through fun.

So someone might LOVE Halloween because—on a deep level—it offers a rare, culturally sanctioned moment to:
✅ Explore forbidden parts of themselves,
✅ Reclaim fear as excitement,
✅ Express desires without judgment,
✅ Merge play with danger,
✅ Mock death to feel more alive.

In other words: Halloween is a psychologically sacred playground where the unconscious gets to come out and eat candy. 🍬💀🎃

Fun With High Cholesterol

My Adventures in High Cholesterol, or: Why Cheese Hates Me

So apparently, I have high cholesterol.

I discovered this because my doctor, who is approximately twelve years old and uses words like “lipoprotein” with a straight face, looked at my blood test results and announced, “You need to make some lifestyle changes.”

This is medical jargon for: “Stop eating things you enjoy and replace them with despair.”

What Even Is Cholesterol?

According to the pamphlet my doctor gave me (which was clearly written by people who have never met cheese), cholesterol is a fatty substance that clogs your arteries and eventually makes your heart explode, probably while you’re doing something really embarrassing, like buying hemorrhoid cream.

There are two kinds:

  • HDL: the “good” cholesterol.

  • LDL: the “bad” cholesterol.

I’m not sure why one is good and the other is bad, but I suspect it has something to do with which one is in pizza.

The Diet Plan of Doom

The doctor says I need to eat more vegetables, whole grains, and fish. And salads. Let me explain something: Salad is not food. Salads are what my food eats. Meanwhile, I’m supposed to avoid bacon, butter, meat, sugar, and basically everything I’ve ever loved to eat.

The pamphlet actually suggested substituting carrot sticks for potato chips. That’s like suggesting you substitute a brick for your pillow.

Exercise, Allegedly

Then there’s exercise. My doctor says if I “just walk thirty minutes a day” it will help lower cholesterol. This sounds simple, except I live in a place where walking anywhere longer than four minutes means you either:

  1. Get run over by a distracted driver.

  2. Melt into the pavement like a human ice-sculpture.

I'd buy a treadmill. But I know it would soon function as a very expensive laundry rack.

The Numbers Game

The worst part is the numbers. My LDL was apparently “too high,” while my HDL was “too low.” I’m now supposed to track this, like I’m monitoring the stock market inside my own bloodstream. Some people invest in Tesla. I invest in celery.

Conclusion

So yes, I have high cholesterol. I’m working on it. I’ll eat the salmon. I’ll take brisk walks. I'll ride my bike. But let me tell you right now: if I keel over, it won’t be because of sausage. It’ll be because I tried to eat one more forkful of quinoa and my body simply refused.

Fun With Ocular Migraines (or "Help! My Brain Is Being A Jerk!")

When Your Brain Decides to Be a Lava Lamp: My Life With Ocular Migraines

If you’ve never had an ocular migraine (that would be 99.9% of you), let me explain: imagine you’re minding your own business, maybe eating a sandwich or scrolling cat videos, when suddenly your eyeballs decide to throw a disco party without your permission.

You don’t get a warning. There’s no polite text from your neurons saying, “Hey, just FYI, things are about to get real crappy.” Nope. One second you’re fine, and the next—BAM!—your vision is replaced with pulsating zigzags of neon lightning, like you’ve been dropped into a Pink Floyd laser show at the county fair.

People who haven’t had one will say helpful things like:

  • “Oh, you mean like floaters?”
No. Floaters are like a fruit fly buzzing around your face. Ocular migraines are like the sun exploded in your retinas.

  • “So you just need glasses?”
Yes, Brenda. Glasses that filter out HELL.

Meanwhile, you’re supposed to continue functioning like a normal adult. For me, that means trying to write emails while it looks like a psychedelic jellyfish is devouring my monitor. You haven’t lived until you’ve squinted at a spreadsheet while your optic nerves are auditioning for Tron 3.

And then comes the fun part: the headache. Sometimes it shows up. Sometimes it doesn’t. But most of the time it does. It’s like the world’s worst surprise party. You can either get thirty minutes of trippy vision followed by relief, or you get thirty minutes of trippy vision followed by a headache so crushing it makes you want to crawl into a deep dark cave and die. When you first see the tell-tale spot glowing in the middle of your vision like a harbinger of doom, the best option is to power dose some Ibuprofen, or whatever pain reliever you prefer, like there's no tomorrow.

Doctors will insist that the causes are “complicated.” Which is medical code for “we have no clue, but stress, caffeine, chocolate, gluten, dairy, breathing, gravity, and the color yellow are all suspects.” Basically, you could be triggered by anything: a skipped meal, bad lighting, or possibly Venus being in retrograde.

What’s the cure? There isn’t one. The most useful advice I’ve ever gotten was:

  • “Just sit in a dark room until it goes away.”
Oh, fantastic. Because nothing makes you feel like a highly evolved mammal quite like hiding in a closet until your brain stops trying to project screensavers from 1997 across your eyeballs.

Anyway, if you’ve never had an ocular migraine, congratulations. Cherish your boring, reliable vision. If you have, maybe we could form a support group. We’ll all sit around in a circle, not looking at each other, because we’ll be too busy staring at the spinning pinwheels of death that only we can see. Pretty sure the main culprit is dehydration. For me at least.

If you're curious it looks pretty much like this...

And/Or this...

Yeesh! Looking at those pictures almost triggers an episode.

Have a good day, and remember, if you start seeing fuzzy, jagged glowing lines forming in your field of vision, you have my permission to go take some aspirin and lay down for the rest of the day.

I absolutely love this music.

Makes me so happy.

RIP Charlie Kirk

The tragedy involving Charlie Kirk is so disturbing. On 9/10/2025 he was murdered (assassinated) in public by a deranged idiot. The only thing that was a blessing in disguise was that he died instantly. The poor guy never knew what hit him. Here one second, gone the next. He was shot by a 30.06 in the neck.

Following this horrific event, many on the left began to mock him, saying he deserved it, and otherwise disrespecting the gravity of the tragedy. Showing blatant disregard for the man's family (parents, wife, and two small kids).

For the last 6 days I have thought of this tragedy over and over and over. It wakes me up at night. I'm so heartsick and I cannot believe some mixed up maniac assassinated him. The guy (who I won't name) reportedly said he regretted doing it. Really?? Why didn't he simply regret the very idea of doing it. Then NOT DO IT! I'm sick about all of this. Charlie was only 31 years old. The guy had 55 years (or maybe more) left to live. What would he have done over 5 more decades of life? Probably could have been president one day. Or maybe held a high cabinet post. The sky was the limit. Sadly he was cut down in his prime by a coward with a gun. So sad!

During the recent presidential campaign I watched many of his videos. He helped get me through. He made sense of the craziness. I did not agree with everything the man said, but he was right probably 95% of the time.

Fat Albert Halloween Special

Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids Halloween Special

On Halloween night, the gang is out trick-or-treating. A kid named Devery brags about being tough and dares the others to go scare the “mean” old lady, Mrs. Bakewell, who lives alone in a creepy house. Some of the kids hesitate, but peer pressure and dares keep pushing them toward it.

Along the way, the gang runs into Mudfoot Brown, the wise old junkyard philosopher. He warns them that frightening or harassing people isn’t the right way to spend Halloween and tries to give them a little common-sense guidance. Of course, the kids laugh it off and keep daring each other.

Eventually, they sneak up to Mrs. Bakewell’s house. Instead of being a “witch” or someone to fear, Mrs. Bakewell welcomes them warmly. She gives them cookies, candy, and soda, and treats them with kindness. The kids realize they had judged her unfairly based on rumors and appearances.

In the end, Devery — the loudest braggart — never actually goes in and ends up embarrassed. The group learns their lesson: don’t assume the worst about people, and don’t let fear or gossip guide your actions.

👉 Themes:

  • Don’t judge people by looks or neighborhood rumors.

  • Peer pressure vs. real courage.

  • Respect for elders.

  • Mudfoot’s role as the voice of wisdom, steering the gang toward the right moral.

Halloween season is here

Every year around this time (note the date on the post) we start seeing the Spirit stores popping up. That's when you know that "spooky season" is here. Halloween is on a Friday this year. Fun.

I probably won't dress up at all this year. This year marks the 3rd year without Dad, who always hosted Halloween festivities at his house. I have many great memories of those times.

We always dress up. Maybe not this year.

I really don't know why I love the holiday so much. Though I have written elsewhere on this blog about why I like creepy stuff. So maybe take a look at that.

Anyway, Happy Halloween folks.

Below are some pics from last year's Halloween...

Maria the Cat

Our beloved little sweet kitty companion Maria, a stray who adopted us and was nothing but sweet all the time, is dying. We don't know why. It all started when her back legs stopped working. This eventually led to disfunction in all her limbs. Poor little kitty. She loved me and I loved her. She was always so sweet! Sat in my lap every night. Now she is suffering. I feel so sad. This one is bad. I almost feel buzzed on sadness... its a weird feeling. I wanted her to be with us for 15 years. Instead we didn't even get 1.

We love you Maria!!!!
