Here's a charming summary of Better Call Saul:
Better Call Saul is a heartwarming tale of a lovable scamp named Jimmy McGill, who, through a series of comically bad life choices, becomes Saul Goodman, a lawyer whose moral compass is spinning like a Tilt-A-Whirl in a hurricane. The show is a prequel to Breaking Bad, which means we already know things will go terribly, but we're gonna enjoy the ride anyway—sort of like watching a slow-motion car crash involving clowns and a meth lab.
Jimmy, who is approximately 47% charm and 53% bad ideas, starts out trying to be a decent lawyer. But the legal profession is complicated, especially when your brother is an electricity-fearing hermit who thinks cell phones are from Satan and sues you for having charisma. Eventually, Jimmy embraces his inner sleazebag and transforms into Saul Goodman, a man whose idea of professional ethics is "Don't get caught."
Meanwhile, we meet Mike "I Broke My Boy" Ehrmantraut, a retired Philadelphia cop who speaks in cryptic growls and handles every situation—from babysitting to murder—with the same calm efficiency of a man making toast. Together, Jimmy and Mike get tangled up with drug lords, shady corporations, and more moral gray areas than a philosophy professor’s inbox.
There’s also Kim Wexler, a brilliant lawyer who is possibly the only character in the entire Breaking Bad universe who flosses regularly and tries to do the right thing, despite dating a man who makes commercials with inflatable Statues of Liberty.
In conclusion, Better Call Saul is a gripping legal drama, a slow-burning character study, and a cautionary tale about how ambition, love, and a total lack of common sense can lead you to a strip mall office with a giant Constitution mural.
Three cheers for Cinnabon!
Along with Breaking Bad, this is my favorite show on TV. We traveled to see many of the filming locations and get a feel for Albuquerque. ABQ gets a bad rap, but we found it to be beautiful and lots of fun. Just don't visit the "war zone". Yeah, it's never good when an area of your city is called the "war zone". You can google that if you want to.
