My Most Influential Books - Vol. 46 (Animal Farm - Orwell)

Animal Farm (1945) is George Orwell’s biting political allegory that uses a farmyard revolution to mirror the events leading up to the Russian Revolution and the subsequent rise of Stalinism. When the overworked animals of Manor Farm overthrow their human master, they envision a utopia based on the principle that "All animals are equal."

However, the dream quickly dissolves as the pigs, led by the ruthless Napoleon, seize power. Through psychological manipulation and brute force, the pigs transform the farm into a dictatorship even more oppressive than the one they replaced. This "fairy story" serves as a timeless warning about the corruption of power, the fragility of democracy, and the way language can be used to twist the truth.
