Elvis: Brownwood 1955

Cherry Springs Tavern... 1955... October 9th (The very next day Elvis encountered 19 year old Sam Walk). Also note.. that means that my dad saw Elvis the night Johnny Cash, Porter Waggoner, Jimmy Newman, Wanda Jackson, and Bobby Lord joined the tour. What a difference a day makes. The lineup for October 10th was A LOT better than the previous day's lineup in my opinion. That lineup would play together for a little over a month. My Dad saw the first night Johnny joined the tour. Might explain why he "just stood over in the corner and didn't say much". He was getting acclimated. anyway...

Jimmy & Johnny (Pretty good!)

and ol' Horace Logan - Founder of the Luisiana Hayride, who MC'd the event.

Here is Elvis the next day with Wanda Jackson... on 10-10-55 (where's Dad?)

Here is a copy of the infamous promo photo Elvis was selling that day. No doubt this is like the one my Dad got a signed copy of.

The detail below was lifted from a larger picture taken on October 13th. Note, the above photo appears in a fan's hand. Also note, no signature is visible.

Here is the bigger picture to show context... fans meeting Elvis...

Note, a couple people have a copy of the Elvis promo shot. One person has a Johnny Cash promo picture as well.

By the way here is a copy of the Johnny Cash photo that can be seen in the above picture...

Two legends!!

My Dad walked through these doors and saw musical and cultural history in the making. Seeing Elvis, he probably thought.. “I could do this."

This is the man my Dad encountered that evening...

Apparently Elvis was actually wearing a white coat just like this. Amazing!!

Also the moon was in a waning crescent phase that night... LOL!

I asked my father if he was impressed by Wanda Jackson and he replied “not so much..” when I told him that apparently Porter Wagoner was there that night too, he was surprised. I guess ol’ Porter didn’t upstage Elvis that night.

He had no recollection of Jimmy Newman either. Truth to tell my father was actually looking forward to seeing this guy that night:

Methods I Use To Relax

Here are 5 ways to calm down and relax:

1. I listen to soothing music. I love to listen to classic rock albums from start to finish. Also classical, light jazz, or instrumental music all work great.

2. I listen to a podcast. It distracts me from the days concerns. I will make sure the topic does not stimulate my brain too much if I’m trying to sleep.

3. I listen to sermons. I find that lessons on God’s word are very soothing to me.

4. I imagine floating past large constructed numbers, which are displayed in number order. This will inevitably lead to slumber.

5. I read a book or the Bible. Sometimes I’ll read something on my phone. The act of reading is very calming to say the least.

How to be an Alpha Male

If you want to be an alpha male, instead of a beta male, you must must MUST get in touch with your masculine. Here are some steps to accomplish this:

01. Be knowledgeable about many subjects, but also be a good listener. Give your opinion and advice when asked or when it is necessary (i.e. rarely).

02. Be confidant, but never boastful. No one likes a blowhard.

03. Be debonair. Definition of debonair: confident, stylish, and charming. But don’t be a jerk about it. Learn to smile a lot!

04. Be self-assured, but not vain.

05. Be courageous, but not reckless.

06. Be goal-oriented, but not egotistical.

07. Be strong, but not overly aggressive or prone to violence.

08. Be level-headed, but not dispassionate. Take both good news and bad with the same calm resolve.

09. Be humorous, but do not act silly or immature. A classy wit goes a long way. Crass and low-brow humor is unattractive. Occasional bawdy humor can be playfully fun, but never lose control of yourself.

10. Be honest, but always exercise tactfulness. Control your words.

11. Be fun, and do not have a short temper. Anger is never charming.

12. Be clean, but don’t be afraid to get dirty if you must. Let me put it this way, you should always strive to emanate pleasant smells from your body.

13. Be emotionally centered. In other words do not be prone to emotional outbursts of any kind.

14. Be level-headed in times of crisis. Think clearly, and be reliable when problems arise. The true alpha male is at his best in troubled times.

15. Be helpful, but never nosey. Evil prevails when good men do nothing.

16. Be willing to accept and apply good advice. Never get to the point that you think you are too smart, too successful, or too old to heed wise counsel. You must ALWAYS be willing to modify your behavior for the better until the day you die.

17. Be compassionate, but not flamboyantly so. Humble compassion is true compassion. Self-serving (fake) compassion is useless.

18. Be sober. Don’t allow yourself to be subject to any substance or habit. You control your habits, not the other way around.

19. Be rigorous. Never grow accustomed to laziness or a life of ease.

20. Be physically and mentally fit. Always strive to stay in shape. A weak man cannot help himself or others, and is approaching uselessness.

Remember my son, always be charming and level-headed. Another hot-headed over-grown baby is NOT what the world needs. The world needs good men (alpha males) to be the life-blood of their communities.
